Brian Johnson, the former offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, was recently dismissed by head coach Nick Sirianni in an effort to revitalize the team’s struggling offense. Despite the firing, there is speculation about the possibility of Johnson reuniting with Shane Steichen, the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, as Steichen had previously attempted to bring some members of the Eagles’ coaching staff to the Colts last offseason, only to be blocked by Sirianni.

Last year, during the NFL Scouting Combine, Nick Sirianni, head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, addressed the attempts by Shane Steichen, head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, to bring some Eagles coaches to the Colts. Sirianni emphasized his responsibility to retain valuable coaches within the Eagles organization, stating that these coaches play a crucial role in daily player interactions and contribute to their improvement.

The query centers around whether Brian Johnson, who is 36 years old, was previously among the Philadelphia Eagles’ assistant coaches that Shane Steichen desired before taking over as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Despite Johnson’s recent dismissal, various teams, including NFL head coaches and general managers, have reportedly expressed interest in having him join their offensive coaching staff.

Brian Johnson previously served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of Florida in 2020, working with Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson. Subsequently, he took on the role of quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2021 to 2022 under the offensive coordinator Shane Steichen. Despite sharing in the team’s challenges, there is a perception that Johnson might have been unfairly singled out for the Eagles’ offensive difficulties. The struggles were seen as a broader issue, encompassing Jalen Hurts’s late-season performance dip and the overall coaching approach led by Nick Sirianni.

As of now, the Indianapolis Colts do not have an immediate opening for a prominent coaching position, considering that current offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter is not expected to be a top candidate for the vacant offensive coordinator position with the Philadelphia Eagles. Additionally, Cam Turner is anticipated to continue serving as the Colts’ quarterbacks coach, and he was formerly an offensive consultant for the Eagles in 2021.

While Brian Johnson has interviewed for several NFL head coach positions in the current hiring cycle, there may be other opportunities for him to secure a more prominent offensive coaching role elsewhere. However, the Colts do not currently have a passing game coordinator on their coaching staff, and there is a possibility that Johnson could reunite with Shane Steichen as a consultant for the Indianapolis offense. This potential move is fueled by Johnson’s existing strong familiarity with Steichen and their shared experience working with Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson.
