In answer to a question concerning defensive coordinator Steve Wilks’ potential return in 2025, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan remained evasive. And there could be a reason why that occurred.
According to Tim Kawakami of TheAthletic.com, Wilks might not be around long if the 49ers think they can locate a replacement.
In their three postseason games, the 49ers allowed an average of 149 rushing yards, according to Kawakami.
Kawakami states, “That’s not the way Shanahan and Lynch want things to go in the biggest games.” “The 49ers are not designed to play that way. They are expected to use physicality to win games, but in all three of their postseason encounters, they were outmatched.
Once more, everything depends on who they can acquire. As Kawakami notes, Wilks might be given an additional year, and if things don’t work out in New York in 2024, Robert Saleh might be able to come back for 2025.
Whatever the case, it will be interesting to see what transpires in the next few days when Shanahan is asked if Wilks will return next year and his response is “I haven’t talked to anybody yet” rather than “hell yes.”
