The official announcement that Pete Carmichael, the former offensive coordinator for the Saints, is officially joining Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos shouldn’t surprise anyone.

For fifteen seasons, Pete Carmichael oversaw offensive strategy for the New Orleans Saints. Sean Payton, the recently-completed first-year head coach of the Broncos, coached the Saints for thirteen of those seasons.

Carmichael’s position in Denver will be slightly different as a senior offensive assistant. Under OC Joe Lombardi, the 52-year-old will be a member of the offensive staff.

Carmichael is one of the NFL’s most seasoned offensive coordinators, despite taking a good deal of heat over the last two seasons. In addition, he has coached a number of players that currently play with Denver (also known as New Orleans West), including Will Lutz, Adam Trautman, Lucas Krull, and Dwayne Washington.

An offensive team that had trouble last season making the most of wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and quarterback Russell Wilson may find Carmichael to be an intriguing acquisition.
