After playing much of the previous season on injured reserve, linebacker Maalik Hall was released by the New York Jets.
According to the official team website, linebacker Maalik Hall was placed on waivers by the New York Jets on Friday.
In April 2023, Hall made his debut with the Jets as an undrafted free agent after graduating from Southeastern Oklahoma State. The 25-year-old soon after that agreed to a three-year, $2.6 million deal with the Jets.
Hall was placed on the team’s injured reserve list after being waived with an injury designation during the preseason, and he stayed there the whole season.
After spending five seasons as a collegiate football player at Southeastern Oklahoma State, Hall played in 43 games with 154 tackles, 14 sacks, three forced fumbles, a blocked kick, three passes defensed, and a fumble recovery. 2021 was his breakout year, as he was named the Great American Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Along with Miami’s Caleb Johnson and Alcorn State’s Claudin Cherelus, Hall was one of three undrafted rookie linebackers who signed UDFA contracts with the Jets last season. The Jets had a roster of ninety players.
Following his release by the Jets during the final roster cuts, Johnson was a member of the practice squads of the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers. In January, he signed a reserve/futures deal with the Cleveland Browns.
Cherelus was also released at the end of the training camp in 2023. After being placed on injured reserve, he was later taken off waivers by the Carolina Panthers. With a strong linebacker corps, New York is anticipated to start the 2018 season well-stocked. Apart from C.J. Mosley, Jamien Sherwood, and Quincy Williams, the roster includes contracted reserves Marcelino McCrary-Ball, Chaz Surratt, and Zaire Barnes. When the league season starts next month, only weakside linebacker Sam Eguavoen will be eligible to sign as an unrestricted free agent.
