One of the Boston Red Sox’s top players doesn’t seem to be happy about the team’s start to the disturbingly quiet offseason. Rafael Devers, a third baseman, appeared to challenge management and the front office to help the Red Sox get the support they need to compete in the American League East during his first media availability of spring training on Tuesday.
According to MLB.com’s Ian Browne, Devers stated, “They need to make an adjustment to help us players to be in a better position to win.” “I think they need to change in order to help us win. Everyone in this organization wants to win, and we as players want to win as well.
“Everyone is aware of our needs. Both of you and they are aware of our needs. Everyone who is familiar with the organization or the game is aware of our requirements.
Although Devers did not state it explicitly, the Red Sox’s starting pitching has been a major problem and source of concern throughout the offseason and hasn’t really been addressed. While notable starting pitchers like Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell were still unsigned as free agents.
The Red Sox were already at the bottom of the American League East standings when many teams (Baltimore and the New York Yankees) made big offseason additions of their own, which is why the lack of roster movement is so concerning.
The Red Sox have only won 78 games in each of the last two seasons and have missed the playoffs in four of the previous five.
For a team that was a regular destination for superstars and won four World Series between 2004 and 2018, this is a spectacular collapse. The team even traded superstar Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers to rectify that.
Red Sox ownership has been under fire from supporters, the media, and former players due to the team’s poor performance and excessive spending. It is now beginning to originate from active gamers.
