On Tuesday, the 49ers announced two adjustments in their front office structure to fill the void left by assistant general manager Adam Peters. Rather than appointing a single individual to take over Peters’ responsibilities, San Francisco opted to elevate both Tariq Ahmad and RJ Gillen to the position of Director of Player Personnel, with both individuals holding that title.
Tariq Ahmad brings a decade of experience with the 49ers to his new role, having served as the director of college scouting for the past three seasons. His responsibilities included overseeing the day-to-day operations of the college scouting department and coordinating player evaluations from collegiate programs to aid in draft preparation and free agency decisions. His continuity within the organization will provide valuable insight during the combine and draft preparations, offering a familiar presence to contribute to roster development.
Meanwhile, RJ Gillen, entering his ninth year with the team, previously held the position of director of pro scouting for the 49ers. In this capacity, Gillen managed the daily operations of the pro scouting department, overseeing player evaluations across various professional leagues to support the team’s acquisition strategies through free agency, trades, and player transactions. Additionally, he conducted advanced scouting and provided assistance to the coaching staff, further demonstrating his integral role within the organization.
