Facing the loss of considerable talent this offseason without ample resources for quality replacements, the San Diego Padres opted for a cost-effective strategy. Recent reports reveal that the Padres are set to sign Brad Miller to a minor league deal, a move aimed at acquiring a versatile player. The news was first reported by AJ Cassavell of MLB.com on Tuesday.
Competing for a bench role on a Padres team with limited depth, the veteran Brad Miller is expected to focus on pinch-hitting duties, serving as a designated hitter, or playing in left field. While his versatility allows him to cover both corner infield positions, the presence of Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth is likely to secure those spots unless injury necessitates a change.

Brad Miller experienced a career peak from 2019 to 2021, boasting a 115 OPS+ with a .812 OPS and 40 home runs. Known for his ability to draw walks and hit for power, he became a valuable part-time slugger against right-handed pitchers. This success earned him a two-year, $10 million deal with the Texas Rangers, but he struggled to maintain his peak performance during his tenure, appearing in only 108 games with a 71 OPS+.

Given the current top-heavy composition of the Padres’ position player group, especially in DH and center field roles, signing Miller to a minor league deal makes strategic sense. The team, featuring several inexperienced players, could benefit from Miller’s seasoned presence. While 34 years old, a healthy Miller offers an upgrade and valuable veteran depth, potentially securing a spot if he performs well during spring training.
