In the initial stages of the legal tampering period, the Green Bay Packers have emerged as one of the most proactive teams in the NFL. They’ve initiated a significant shift in their offensive lineup by securing the services of star running back Josh Jacobs from the Las Vegas Raiders.

With AJ Dillon heading towards free agency, the Packers identified a gap in their backfield and swiftly targeted Jacobs as a top priority. As a result of this acquisition, Jacobs is poised to assume the role of the primary ball carrier for the team, marking the departure of Aaron Jones, who is set to be released.

The Packers are not solely focused on Jacobs; they’ve also made a significant move to bolster their secondary. In a bid to enhance their defensive backfield, Green Bay has made a substantial acquisition by reaching an agreement with former New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney.

Reportedly, the Packers are set to seal the deal with McKinney on a lucrative four-year contract worth $68 million. This development was confirmed by David Mulugheta of Athletes First, who represents McKinney.

The acquisition of McKinney marks a significant upgrade for the Packers’ defense, particularly as they undergo changes ahead of the 2024 season. With the departure of defensive coordinator Joe Barry and the recent release of linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, the Packers are already reshaping their defensive roster.

McKinney’s addition addresses a significant gap in the Packers’ defense, particularly at the safety position, which has been a weakness in recent seasons. With several key safeties hitting free agency, including Darnell Savage, who has already signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, McKinney’s versatility and reliability make him a valuable asset for the team.

Known for his adaptability and strong coverage skills, McKinney has demonstrated the ability to play various roles on defense, including in the box, as a deep safety, and even in the slot. Under the coaching of Wink Martindale, he showcased his versatility by taking on diverse responsibilities, such as edge rushing and covering perimeter receivers.

Moreover, McKinney’s durability is a significant asset for the Packers, as he played every defensive snap in every game for the Giants last season. This consistency provides reassurance for a team that faced numerous injuries to key players in crucial positions during the previous season.
