“In a statement shared on social media, the Mets conveyed their well wishes to Darryl Strawberry, his wife Tracy, and their entire family following the heart attack he experienced on Monday night. The Mets organization expressed solidarity with Strawberry, noting his recent involvement as a guest instructor with the team in Port St. Lucie just a few weeks prior. They wished him a swift recovery.
Furthermore, the Mets announced plans to retire Strawberry’s iconic number 18 in a ceremony scheduled for June 1. Additionally, they will retire Dwight Gooden’s number 16 on April 14. Both players played pivotal roles in the Mets’ 1986 World Series victory over the Boston Red Sox.
Strawberry, a seven-time All-Star during his tenure with the Mets from 1983 to 1990, was honored with the NL Rookie of the Year award in 1983. Beyond his baseball career, Strawberry currently serves as an ordained minister.”
