The New England Patriots are heading into the 2024 season with adjusted expectations, led by Jerod Mayo and Eliot Wolf as they reshape the organization according to their vision. Players like Mike Onwenu, Kyle Dugger, and Kendrick Bourne are set to return and play significant roles in establishing the new culture in Foxborough.

With a substantial $53.4 million in cap space, the Patriots have the financial capacity to make impactful additions to their roster. One potential area of focus is strengthening their secondary, where the name of Stephon Gilmore has emerged as a noteworthy possibility. According to Karen Guregian’s article, a source revealed that the experienced cornerback is open to various options, including a potential return to the Patriots.

Gilmore was a standout performer for the New England Patriots from 2017 to 2020, earning two First-Team All-Pro selections and the AP Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2019. Although he may not be at the same level as before, Gilmore remains a solid contributor in the defensive backfield.

During his recent stint with the Dallas Cowboys, Gilmore showcased his skills with 68 total tackles, 13 pass deflections, and two interceptions in 17 games. He also received a respectable 74.4 grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Bringing Gilmore back to New England would not only bolster the team’s defense but also provide valuable mentorship to younger players like Christian Gonzalez. Learning from an experienced and decorated cornerback like Gilmore could significantly benefit the development of the entire defensive unit.

As the Patriots aim to improve their prospects for the 2024 season, making impactful moves in the offseason will be crucial. Despite being considered underdogs according to FanDuel Sportsbook, a successful offseason could enhance the team’s chances of competing in the AFC East.
