North Providence police reported that former New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler was intoxicated and obstructing a lane on Mineral Spring Avenue.

Former New England Patriots cornerback and Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler was reportedly arrested recently following an incident where North Providence police found him driving under the influence of alcohol. The arrest took place on March 16, as revealed by police and court records obtained by WPRI 12. Officers encountered Butler driving a white Mercedes-Benz, which was stopped in the westbound lane of Mineral Spring Avenue, causing a traffic obstruction.

During their interaction with Butler, police noted signs of intoxication such as a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes, as reported by NBC 10. Butler declined to take a chemical test or perform field sobriety tests, according to police accounts. He allegedly told the officers, “Just take me to jail,” as per WPRI 12’s report.

Butler has been charged with driving under the influence and is set to appear for arraignment on Thursday.

Malcolm Butler had a notable career in the NFL, playing four seasons with the New England Patriots and three with the Tennessee Titans. Throughout his playing career, he accumulated 406 tackles and 17 interceptions. Butler is most renowned for his interception of Russell Wilson, the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks, near the end of Super Bowl XLIX, a play that played a pivotal role in securing the Patriots’ fourth championship title.
