Inter Miami’s assistant coach, Javier Morales, has provided an update on Lionel Messi’s expected return to action following his injury layoff. Messi has been sidelined with a minor hamstring strain for more than two weeks after sustaining the injury during a CONCACAF Champions Cup match against Nashville.
As a precaution, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner missed Inter Miami’s game against D.C. United and the subsequent international break. However, he is now undergoing light training in hopes of being available for Wednesday’s match against Monterrey.
Morales clarified, stating, “Leo is working with the physios. He is ruled out for tomorrow’s game against NYCFC, but we are doing our best to ensure he can play at home next Wednesday against Monterrey.”
Since joining Inter Miami, Messi has featured in 19 games, with the team winning 15 of them. However, in his absence, Inter Miami has faced challenges in securing positive results, as seen in their recent loss to the New York Red Bulls.
While Messi will have to sit out the upcoming match against NYCFC, he remains hopeful of recovering in time to participate in the Champions Cup quarter-final. Inter Miami, along with the Columbus Crew, are the only MLS teams remaining in the tournament.
