The Minnesota Vikings are honing in on their quarterback options for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, but it seems likely they’ll need to make a trade to secure their preferred prospect. Armed with the 11th and 23rd overall picks, the Vikings have been actively scouting quarterbacks during the pre-draft process, attending multiple pro days to assess potential talent.
Quarterbacks Coach Josh McCown personally attended workouts for Caleb Williams, J.J. McCarthy, and Drake Maye, indicating the team’s interest in these prospects. Notably, they did not attend pro days for Bo Nix and Michael Penix. However, a planned meeting with Jayden Daniels did not materialize, possibly due to uncertainties surrounding his future.
With the likelihood of Caleb Williams being chosen as the top pick by the Chicago Bears, the Vikings are focusing on two primary prospects: Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy. Among these, Maye appears to be the preferred choice.
“There’s a belief among some teams that Minnesota could try to trade up to get him,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler stated on “SportsCenter” on March 29. “It would take a lot, but they are armed with two first-round picks to try to make it happen.”
Maye is one of the youngest prospects among the top six quarterbacks projected to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, scheduled for April 25th.
Despite recently signing Sam Darnold to a one-year, $10 million contract, the Vikings view him as a short-term solution. In contrast, Drake Maye could step into a promising situation with strong coaching support, a talented supporting cast, and an innovative defense, making the Vikings one of the most quarterback-friendly environments in the league.
