The Philadelphia Phillies are aiming to avoid a sweep by the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, following losses in the initial two games of the season-opening series.

Facing the challenge, the Phillies will confront former All-Star pitcher Chris Sale, who demonstrated promising form during Spring Training. Notably absent from the Phillies’ lineup for the series finale is first baseman Bryce Harper, among other key hitters.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson informed the press prior to the game that Harper was designated for a day off, with plans for his return in the next game against the Cincinnati Reds, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic.

Alec Bohm will take Harper’s place in the lineup, positioned in the three-spot and filling in at first base. The decision to rest Harper stirred recollections of Saturday’s game when he made a dramatic leap over the railing in an attempt to catch a ball.

Fortunately, Harper emerged unscathed from the alarming fall in the dugout, yet speculation arises regarding any lingering soreness resulting from the incident. Despite his absence, the 31-year-old slugger has yet to notch a hit in the opening two games of the regular season, coinciding with the Phillies’ offensive struggles.
