Calais Campbell remains unsigned well after completing his debut season in Atlanta. Despite this, there’s still a possibility that the All-Decade defender, Calais Campbell, could return to the Falcons for the 2024 season if he decides to prolong his career.
Last offseason, Campbell, aged 37, joined the team on a one-year contract amid uncertainties surrounding his future in the league, following his departure from the Baltimore Ravens after three seasons.
Although renowned for his prowess as a defensive lineman, especially in the latter part of his career, Campbell primarily operated on the edge for Atlanta as planned. Throughout the 2023 season, he appeared in all 17 games, accumulating 6.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss.
Given his performance, the Falcons are keen on extending Campbell’s tenure with the team. Head coach Raheem Morris, along with general manager Terry Fontenot, have expressed their interest in re-signing Campbell. Morris mentioned that while he has had preliminary discussions with the veteran player, he looks forward to the opportunity of meeting Campbell in person to directly discuss the prospect of him remaining in Atlanta.
“I look forward to getting a chance to sit in front of him because he’s certainly impressive as it.”
“When he comes to football character,” Morris said, “he’s had an impressive career that you can have… I’m looking forward to discussing that in further detail with him at a later date.”
Campbell tied for the team lead in sacks, highlighting his enduring ability as he ages, but also emphasizing the Falcons’ need to bolster their pass-rush. While he achieved a significant personal milestone last season by surpassing 100 career sacks, it wouldn’t be surprising if teams considered him more of a rotational player going forward. Campbell maintained a 63% snap share, consistent with his usage in previous seasons and his planned role ahead of the 2023 campaign.
Despite his age, Campbell remained a formidable force against the run last season, earning an 80.2 PFF grade in that aspect. If he continues his career into 2024, he would likely provide similar contributions. Campbell’s decision regarding his future will be closely watched as the offseason progresses. However, the Falcons, who currently have limited cap space at $6.3 million entering the draft, would undoubtedly welcome his return.
