On Friday morning, the Winnipeg Jets revealed that goaltender Laurent Brossoit has been selected as the team’s nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy by the Winnipeg Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
The Masterton Trophy is presented each year to a player who demonstrates exceptional perseverance, sportsmanship, and commitment to the sport of hockey.
Brossoit’s journey to his current success with the Winnipeg Jets has been marked by challenges and perseverance. The 31-year-old goaltender faced a series of ups and downs throughout his career, including injury setbacks and fluctuations in performance.
Beginning his professional journey with the Edmonton Oilers, Brossoit encountered difficulties during his four-year tenure with the team, where he primarily served as a backup goaltender.
However, following his free agency in 2018, the Jets offered him a one-year contract, providing him with a fresh opportunity to prove himself.
His time in Winnipeg proved to be transformative for Brossoit, as he flourished with a 13-6-2 record and an impressive .925 save percentage in his debut season.
Despite his success, he later ventured to the Vegas Golden Knights as a free agent, where he showcased glimpses of his starting potential, albeit hindered by injuries.
Despite the challenges, Brossoit celebrated a Stanley Cup victory with the Golden Knights in 2023 before ultimately returning to the Jets, where he continues to make significant contributions to the team’s success.
Despite facing challenges at the start of the 2023-24 season due to injury rehabilitation, Brossoit experienced a turnaround in his performance in early December.
He has since emerged as a key player for the Winnipeg Jets, forming a formidable goaltending tandem with Connor Hellebuyck and boasting a league-leading .917 save percentage (SV%).
Brossoit’s journey in the NHL has been marked by adversity, but his dedication and resilience have not gone unnoticed. His nomination for the 2023-24 Bill Masterton Trophy by the Winnipeg Jets is a testament to his perseverance and commitment to the sport of hockey.
