Michigan football fans may be curious about the lack of commitments under new head coach Sherrone Moore. One reason could be the significant turnover in the coaching staff, particularly on the defensive side. The Wolverines had to completely revamp their defensive coaching staff, including hiring a new defensive line coach twice due to resignations.

Hurricanes land two transfers, 2025 linebacker prospect

Since the departure of former head coach Jim Harbaugh, it has been a tumultuous period, and building relationships with recruits takes time. However, Michigan football is gradually gaining momentum, taking the lead in several recruitments recently and actively pursuing the commitment flip of a four-star linebacker currently committed to Miami.

The player in question is Elijah Melendez, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound prospect from Kissimmee, Florida. According to his On3 recruiting profile, he is ranked No. 157 overall in the 2025 class.

Melendez has been committed to the Hurricanes since December. However, Brian Jean-Mary, the linebackers coach at Michigan football, seems to be actively working to bring Michigan back into contention for Melendez.

Before his commitment to Miami, Melendez visited schools like Tennessee, where Jean-Mary was previously the linebackers coach. Melendez also visited Michigan football previously, and it appears that he visited again this week or is planning to do so.

Melendez is reportedly planning to visit Miami once again this weekend, indicating the Hurricanes have the advantage of being in-state. However, if Michigan football can successfully host him for an official visit, including a game next fall, it could significantly boost their chances.

Additionally, the defensive scheme implemented by Wink Martindale, while Martindale himself may not be an active recruiter, could be enticing to potential recruits. The upcoming season promises an exciting defensive performance from Michigan, which could further attract prospects like Melendez.
