On this day in Braves history, Atlanta inaugurated SunTrust Park with a victorious game against the San Diego Padres.

Braves Franchise History:
1931 – Jack Quinn of the Brooklyn Robins starts an Opening Day game at Braves Field at the age of 47, becoming the oldest pitcher to do so. The Braves win the game, defeating the Robins 7-4.

2014 – Dan Uggla hits two home runs, including a grand slam in the ninth inning, to lead the Braves to a 9-6 victory over the Phillies. Uggla, Evan Gattis, and Andrelton Simmons hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning to give the Braves a 5-1 lead. The Phillies score five runs in the bottom of the eighth, setting the stage for Uggla’s heroics in the ninth.

MLB History:
1880 – The Cincinnati Bank Street Grounds opens with an exhibition game between the Red Stockings and the Washington Nationals. The park, with a seating capacity of 3,490, serves professional teams in three different leagues: the National League, the American Association in 1882 and 1883, and the Union Association in 1884.

1925 – Quin Ryan broadcasts the first regular-season Chicago Cubs game on the radio from the grandstand roof for WGN.

1955 – Elston Howard becomes the first black player in New York Yankees history.

1964 – Sandy Koufax throws his ninth complete game without allowing a walk as he wins his only career Opening Day start against the Cardinals.

1969 – The Montreal Expos host their first game, marking the first time a regular-season major league game is played outside of the United States.

1990 – Bret Saberhagen earns the win and Mark Davis gets the save as the Royals defeat the Blue Jays 3-1. It is the first time in major league history that the two reigning Cy Young Award winners contribute to the same victory.

1991 – Nolan Ryan surpasses 5,000 innings pitched, becoming the 12th pitcher in major league history to do so.

1999 – John Franco records his 400th career save by striking out the side in the ninth inning to secure a 4-1 win for the Mets over the Marlins. He becomes the second relief pitcher in major league history to reach this milestone.
