The Atlanta Braves have made a roster adjustment ahead of their upcoming series against the Texas Rangers, bringing up utility player from AAA Gwinnett.
Williams, 27, joined the Braves in June 2023 after being claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. During his time with the team last year, he played in seven games but went hitless in nine at-bats. He showcased his versatility by appearing as a pinch runner, and playing at first and third base, as well as in left field.
The decision to call up Williams likely stems from his ability to play multiple positions. Over his 133 major league appearances spanning three seasons, Williams has demonstrated his versatility by playing every defensive position except catcher, and even pitching one inning for the Dodgers.
The corresponding move involved optioning outfielder Forrest Wall to AAA Gwinnett. Initially, the Braves had rewarded Wall for his offseason dedication and impressive performance during spring training by granting him a spot on the Opening Day roster. Wall had diligently worked with Braves hitting coaches during the winter and showcased his abilities in Grapefruit League action, batting .308/.400/564 with three home runs, three stolen bases, and ten RBIs in 39 at-bats.
However, despite his strong showing, Wall, serving as the team’s fifth outfielder, had limited opportunities with the Braves during the first three weeks of the season. With Adam Duvall and Jarred Kelenic being the primary choices for pinch-hitting duties, Wall only managed to secure one at-bat.
During a similar part-time role last season, Wall demonstrated his capabilities by going 6-13 with one home run, two doubles, and six runs scored. Additionally, he successfully executed five out of six stolen base attempts, serving as Atlanta’s primary pinch-running option.
Sending Wall to Gwinnett, especially with outfielders Skye Bolt and Eli White sidelined due to injury, ensures that he will have the opportunity to receive regular playing time and at-bats. This move provides him with the chance to stay sharp and be prepared for potential needs at the major league level.
