The struggling South Sydney Rabbitohs have announced the return of former assistant coach David Furner, reuniting him with head coach Jason Demetriou.

Furner and Demetriou previously worked together as assistant coaches for the Cowboys during the 2015 Premiership year. Furner also served as an assistant at the Rabbitohs in 2017 and 2018.

A former NRL Premiership winner and Clive Churchill Medallist, Furner had a successful playing career that included representing NSW in State of Origin matches.

Following his playing days, Furner transitioned into coaching, starting as an assistant coach and later becoming head coach of the Raiders. He has also worked with various teams including the Australian national team, the Knights, Bulldogs, and most recently the Tigers last year.

“He will take on the responsibility of defensive coaching at South Sydney, a team that has conceded 196 points in their six games (resulting in five losses), leaving them at the bottom of the ladder.
“I’m thrilled to have David joining our coaching staff. His addition will greatly benefit our team and, most importantly, our players,” stated Jason Demetriou in a club announcement.

“We are actively seeking ways to enhance our performances, and we believe that having an experienced coach like him focus on the team’s defensive strategies will be a positive step.
“We have previously collaborated and enjoyed success together at the Cowboys, and his prior experience with the club will be invaluable.”

Mark Ellison, the Rabbitohs Head of Football, expressed, “David is an immensely experienced coach who has previously collaborated effectively with Jason, contributing to the Cowboys’ inaugural premiership victory in 2015.

“Having previously coached at our club, he possesses an understanding of our values and culture. His appointment will enable Jason to allocate more time to the multifaceted responsibilities of a head coach, including player mentoring and staff management, as we strive to steer this season in the right direction.
“We’re thrilled to welcome ‘Furnsy’ back to South Sydney.”
