Diontae Johnson is aware that his incoming quarterback could benefit from support to bounce back after a challenging rookie year. The recently acquired Carolina Panthers wide receiver is confident that he can aid Bryce Young in making strides in his second year.

“I aim to be a reliable target for him, providing him with reassurance when he’s in the pocket, knowing he has a receiver capable of getting open across the entire field,” Johnson expressed on Tuesday, as reported by ESPN. “That’s my role here—to contribute by making impactful plays.”

Seeking to bolster their receiving corps, the Panthers acquired Johnson to provide a veteran presence alongside Adam Thielen, with the aim of easing the burden on Young. Last season, Carolina’s group of pass-catchers struggled to create separation, impeding Young’s ability to find open targets.

Johnson’s knack for winning at the line of scrimmage and threatening defenses vertically should immediately create opportunities for Young and the offense.

Describing his new quarterback, Johnson praised Young’s accuracy and intelligence, highlighting his ability to make plays all over the field. Johnson expressed his commitment to aiding Young’s development and fostering his growth.

The Panthers have placed their faith in Young’s progression and have made significant offseason adjustments to support him. These changes include hiring QB-friendly coach Dave Canales, acquiring Johnson via trade, and investing in interior offensive linemen. The team’s efforts to fortify the offense are expected to continue in the upcoming draft, where they are likely to add at least one more receiver to their roster.
