Duke basketball has officially added Maliq Brown to its roster. With room for up to three more scholarship players for the 2024-25 season, the team is expected to secure at least two more via the transfer portal in the near future. Jon Scheyer, now in his third year as head coach following two successful campaigns, has already recruited two transfers for the upcoming season: Maliq Brown, a former Syracuse forward and ACC All-Defensive Team selection, and Mason Gillis, a graduate forward from Purdue.
Despite Brown’s commitment almost a week prior, his official addition to the team was announced on Thursday through a press release and social media content provided by Duke. Included in the announcement was Scheyer’s evaluation of the newly recruited Blue Devil.
Brown, standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 222 pounds, is a formidable presence in the paint. Just a few months ago, he scored 26 points against the 2023-24 Duke basketball team at Cameron Indoor Stadium, despite Syracuse’s loss. Scheyer acknowledges the impact that the former three-star recruit from Virginia can have on the court.
“We are excited to welcome Maliq Brown to our program,” Scheyer said of the 20-year-old, who averaged 9.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game as a full-time starter for Syracuse last season. “Maliq is a skilled, tough, and versatile forward who brings a competitive mentality to every game and practice.”
Last season at Syracuse, he stood out as one of the nation’s most effective offensive players and ranked among the ACC’s top defenders, leading the league in steals. Maliq is dedicated to executing the small but crucial tasks that contribute to victories. As a rising junior and recognized All-ACC defender, he embodies a team-centric approach and possesses winning instincts that will enhance our team.
