A couple of key Collingwood midfielders are reportedly racing against time to recover for Friday’s highly anticipated showdown against Carlton.
According to Xander McGuire from 9 News, experienced Magpies players Jordan De Goey and Tom Mitchell are both contending with injuries – De Goey with a groin issue and Mitchell with a foot problem.
These ailments are believed to have stemmed from their recent Anzac Day match, where they played significant roles, amassing a combined total of 42 possessions. Mitchell was even substituted out during the game for strategic reasons.
As the team approaches Round 8, both players will undergo fitness assessments in the days leading up to the match, with Collingwood’s main training session set for Wednesday followed by a captain’s run on Thursday. Their availability will likely be determined right up to the last minute before the game.
If Jordan De Goey or Tom Mitchell are unable to recover in time to face the Blues, it’s likely that fringe players Lachie Sullivan and Finlay Macrae will be considered to fill their roles.
Macrae showcased strong form in the VFL over the weekend, making him a compelling option, while Sullivan has been impressive throughout the opening five games of the competition since joining Collingwood’s senior list from Footscray via the Supplemental Selection Period.
Additionally, veteran midfielder Steele Sidebottom may come into consideration after a quieter performance last week, and fringe defender Oleg Markov continues to make a case for selection at the VFL level. The Magpies will unveil their squad for Friday’s match at 6:20pm (AEST) on Thursday.
