One of the main challenges facing Michigan football as they head into the 2024 season is a lack of depth at the cornerback position.
While Michigan might boast the best cornerback in college football with Will Johnson, there isn’t another proven player on the roster ready to step in and start. Jyaire Hill shows promise, having looked impressive in the spring. The 6-foot-2 defensive back was ranked in the top 200 overall in the 2023 recruiting class.
However, performing well in the spring and delivering in the fall are two different things. To mitigate this risk, Michigan has been seeking additional talent since DJ Waller transferred to Kentucky.
Michigan needed to bring in at least one cornerback via the transfer portal this spring, but prospects looked dim after Terrance Brooks chose Illinois over Michigan.
However, the Wolverines had another target: Albany cornerback Aamir Hall. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound corner was an FCS All-American in 2023, recording five interceptions and 15 pass breakups.
Hall also had a standout season at Richmond with 13 pass breakups. His ball skills are exceptional, and being an FCS All-American is a significant achievement.
Hall visited Michigan on Wednesday, and following that visit, Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports reported that Hall is expected to commit to Michigan. This was supported by crystal ball projections from 247 Sports and expert predictions from Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos of On3.com.
It seems like Hall’s move to Michigan is imminent, which is excellent news. Having options is crucial, and the prospect of Hall and Hill competing for the starting job, along with Ja’Den McBurrows and others like Myles Pollard and Kody Jones, certainly improves the outlook for the cornerback room.
While Hall might not be a flashy addition, it’s a solid and practical move. Even if the transfer doesn’t start, having quality depth is invaluable. Michigan learned the importance of this during their national championship run. Ultimately, you can never have too many good corners on your roster.
