As summer arrives, Clemson is beginning to extend its first scholarship offers for the 2026 class. Samari Matthews, a highly regarded four-star cornerback from Hough High School (Cornelius, N.C.), is the first to receive an offer from the Tigers.
Matthews shared his excitement with The Clemson Insider: “Getting the offer from Clemson was amazing. It’s something I was looking forward to, and to have it is a blessing.”
The offer came from cornerbacks coach Mike Reed. Matthews is ranked as the nation’s No. 6 corner and No. 83 overall prospect in the 2026 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
“Coach’s message to me was he likes me and that I would be a great fit in his system,” Matthews said.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound rising junior has developed a strong connection with Reed during the recruitment process.
“My relationship with Coach Reed is amazing,” Matthews said. “Every time I see him it’s always love.”
Matthews attended a Clemson camp last summer and visited again for junior day in March. He plans to return soon.
“I hope to make it back down this summer. If not, definitely sometime this year,” he said.
After receiving an offer, Clemson stands out in Matthews’ recruitment.
“The family atmosphere, the history, the coaching, the prestigious football program it is, and plus it’s close to home, all of that makes Clemson stand out to me,” Matthews said. His list of over 30 offers includes top programs like Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Ohio State.
“As for where they are in my process, I would say they are in my top 5 for sure. I plan on cutting my list down this upcoming season, and Clemson will be in there.”
