The St. Louis Cardinals might undergo significant roster changes this summer if they don’t position themselves as buyers before the July 30 trade deadline.

Several key players, including Ryan Helsley, JoJo Romero, Kyle Gibson, Lance Lynn, and surprisingly, Sonny Gray, have been mentioned as trade candidates.

A notable name now linked to three American League teams could result in a devastating trade for Cardinals fans.

“(Paul) Goldschmidt going to the (Houston) Astros, (Seattle) Mariners, or (New York) Yankees could make sense,” wrote The Athletic’s Jim Bowden on Tuesday, speculating on potential moves for all 30 MLB teams at the trade deadline.

There have been ongoing speculations about Goldschmidt’s future, with the Cardinals at risk of initiating a fire sale if they can’t improve before the deadline.

Paul Goldschmidt Is On Fire, And The Cardinals' Home Park Is Significantly Helping Him

Goldschmidt is currently batting .229 with 16 extra-base hits, including seven home runs, 25 RBIs, and a .656 OPS in 62 games this season.

Although Goldschmidt isn’t having his best season at the plate, teams are likely to be interested in trading for him, expecting he won’t continue to struggle.

The Astros, Mariners, and Yankees have enough prospect capital to trade for Goldschmidt. It might make sense for St. Louis to consider their offers if they decide to sell. The Cardinals already have a young core of position players and could benefit from acquiring pitching prospects for the future.

While it would be hard to part with the seven-time All-Star, trading him could ultimately benefit the Cardinals in the long run.
