The Boston Red Sox have hovered around .500 this year and need to quickly improve their standings to avoid selling at the trade deadline.
Despite not having a fully healthy roster at any point this season, the Red Sox have managed a 35-34 record, performing above expectations. However, this might not be enough to justify buying at the deadline.
If they end up selling, Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta is expected to be highly sought after, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Heyman stated, “The belief is that the Rays and Red Sox—buried in a division with two dominant teams and having realistic front offices—may well sell. That would aid the starting pitching market, as Nick Pivetta and Zach Eflin, among others, would be coveted.”
Pivetta is having one of the best seasons of his eight-year career, with a 3.88 ERA in nine starts and a 55-to-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 46 1/3 innings pitched.
Although the Red Sox have significant talent and should improve as key players return from injuries, they need to go on a run soon. Otherwise, a roster shake-up at the trade deadline appears likely.
