The New York Knicks are just a week away from the 2024 NBA Draft, holding the Nos. 24 and 25 picks in the first round.
While it’s uncertain if the Knicks will retain both picks, selecting a guard seems likely if they do.
CBS Sports writer Adam Finkelstein projects Baylor guard Ja’Kobe Walter to be the Knicks’ choice at No. 24.
“Walter could be off the board by this point, but if available, he makes a lot of sense for the Knicks. He possesses the physical tools to defend as Tom Thibodeau prefers, is a promising shooter, and would enhance their depth in the middle of the lineup,” Finkelstein wrote.
Walter, who averaged 14.5 points per game and shot 34 percent from beyond the arc this season with the Bears, was initially a lottery pick but might fall on draft night. If he’s available when the Knicks are up, he should be a strong consideration.
To ensure the Knicks are content with a shooting guard, Finkelstein also suggested Miami’s Kyshawn George for the No. 25 pick.
“A backup big would make sense given Isaiah Hartenstein’s free agency, but with Ware, Missi, Edey, and Holmes off the board (or if the Knicks are confident they can re-sign Hartenstein), George provides a developmental late-blooming big wing they can groom in Westchester,” Finkelstein wrote.
Unlike Walter, George has been rising on draft boards due to his raw abilities. It would be surprising if the Knicks had a chance to draft him, but if he’s available, they should consider him.
Although it’s unlikely the Knicks will use both picks on guards, there could be valuable options in the mid-20s. The Knicks should aim to leave draft night feeling positive about their new prospect(s).
