I’ve mentioned Nacho Alvarez several times as a potential replacement for Orlando Arcia. While this change may not be imminent, it’s becoming an option the Braves might need to consider more seriously with each passing day.

Orlando Arcia has essentially been a guaranteed out for nearly two months. Though he contributes significantly on defense, his hitting below the Mendoza Line is a major issue, especially given the Braves’ current needs.

With Ronald Acuña Jr. out for the season and other players struggling, offense has been the primary reason Atlanta has fallen short of expectations this season. This is where Nacho Alvarez could provide a significant upgrade over the Braves’ current shortstop.

Since his promotion, Alvarez has been on fire at the plate, notably showcasing some power. In just six games with the Stripers, he’s hit three home runs, including a first-inning shot last night.

Nacho Alvarez also hit a double yesterday, bringing his total to six extra-base hits in six games with the Stripers.

It’s likely best for the Braves to let him get as many reps as possible in Gwinnett before considering a call-up to Atlanta. This period will also provide a clearer picture of whether Orlando Arcia can break out of his slump. Despite being an All-Star last season and excelling defensively, Arcia’s offensive struggles are concerning, even though he has a very affordable contract. Meanwhile, Nacho Alvarez represents the future at the position. If Arcia can’t improve offensively and Alvarez continues to perform well in AAA, the decision for the Braves will become much simpler.
