Former Draft Bust Trey Lance Could Be a Trade Candidate for the Ravens

Former draft-bust quarterback Trey Lance could be a potential trade target for the Baltimore Ravens this summer. Reports suggest that the Dallas Cowboys might benefit from trading their No. 3 quarterback before the season begins. The Ravens’ depth chart behind Lamar Jackson is underwhelming, with journeyman Josh Johnson currently serving as the backup. This situation might prompt Baltimore to seek additional reliability for the No. 2 position.

Lance hasn’t taken a snap for the Cowboys yet, raising concerns about his future despite having many years ahead of him. His stint with the 49ers didn’t go as planned, especially with Brock Purdy emerging as the franchise starter. Although Lance aims for a starting role, he might settle for a backup spot behind the two-time MVP Jackson, seeing it as an opportunity to learn in a strong system.

Baltimore Ravens Linked To Trading For Former No. 3 Pick QB

While the Cowboys might consider promoting Lance to the No. 2 position, it’s uncertain what he can achieve as a starter over a full season, given his injury-marred start with the 49ers. A move to the Ravens could help Lance develop and potentially become a starter elsewhere. It’s unlikely Baltimore will move on from Jackson unless he consistently underperforms, but having Lance as a reliable backup could be beneficial.

The Cowboys might retain Lance and trade Cooper Rush, considering they still need to extend Dak Prescott this offseason.

Other Potential Trade Candidates

**Los Angeles Chargers**
Justin Herbert is set to be the Chargers’ quarterback for the foreseeable future, but the team lost key players like Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and Austin Ekeler in one offseason. With adjustments underway for the new offense, Herbert might struggle, potentially leading the Chargers to trade for a quarterback like Lance. While not an immediate solution, Lance could be a valuable addition to the rotation.

**New Orleans Saints**
Derek Carr’s future with the Saints hinges on his performance in the 2024 campaign. The current roster may not be providing him with the best tools for success, and with the Saints in salary cap debt, their chances of landing a top quarterback prospect in 2025 are slim. Lance could be an option if Carr doesn’t improve.

**Kansas City Chiefs**
Patrick Mahomes is secure as the Chiefs’ quarterback for the next decade, provided he stays healthy. However, the team lacks reliable backups, with Chad Henne being their best option in recent years. Lance could join the Chiefs on a one-year contract to compete for the No. 2 spot.
