Since Lance Leipold took over as head coach in 2021, the Kansas football team has boasted one of the most potent offenses in the Big 12. A significant part of their scoring success stems from their powerful rushing attack, which ranked in the top 25 nationally in both 2022 and 2023.

Star running back Devin Neal has been a cornerstone of the offense, earning All-Big 12 honors after stellar sophomore and junior seasons. Behind Neal is fifth-year back Daniel Hishaw Jr., who frequently plays alongside Neal in various situations. Together, they’ve formed one of the top rushing duos in Division I football, with Pro Football Focus writer Max Chadwick ranking them as the eighth-best running back unit in the country.

Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw Named Top 10 CFB Running Back Duo

“Devin Neal has been one of the most productive running backs in the nation over the last couple seasons. Since 2022, the junior’s 2,373 rushing yards trail only Quinshon Judkins and Blake Corum among Power Five rushers. His 25 rushing touchdowns in that span are fourth in that same group to Corum, Judkins, and Audric Estime. The Jayhawks also return their No. 2 running back in Daniel Hishaw Jr., who was one of the nation’s most efficient tackle-breakers in 2023. His 38% forced missed tackle rate was tied for fifth among all halfbacks in the country last year.” — Max Chadwick, PFF

The recognition is well-deserved for Kansas fans. Neal is widely regarded as one of the nation’s best running backs, and he is on pace for a record-setting senior year. If he rushes for 834+ yards, Neal will surpass June Henley as the program’s all-time leading rusher.

Despite having the option to enter the NFL Draft after last season, Neal chose to return to Kansas to complete his college career. He is projected to be a third or fourth-round pick in next year’s draft and could boost his stock with another standout season. As the top recruit in Kansas during his high school years, Neal is living his dream by playing for the Jayhawks.

Hishaw, on the other hand, could significantly elevate KU’s running back room if he can address some of his flaws. He has struggled with ball security and has had lapses in the passing game. Additionally, he missed the entire 2021 season and only played in five games in 2022. Staying healthy and avoiding injuries will be crucial for him and the Jayhawks.

While KU might have ranked slightly higher on the list, it’s gratifying to see Neal and Hishaw receive the recognition they deserve.
