On Sunday, June 23, 2024, Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced the signing of defenseman Ian Mitchell to a one-year, two-way contract with a salary cap hit of $775,000 for the 24-25 season.

Mitchell, a depth defenseman for the Bruins, played in 13 games during the 23-24 season, recording two assists, a plus-six rating, and ten penalty minutes. Throughout his career, he has appeared in 95 NHL games over four seasons, tallying four goals, 14 assists, 18 points, and a minus-15 rating. He spent most of the 23-24 season with the Providence Bruins, the AHL affiliate, where he played 42 games, scored six goals, added 18 assists for 24 points, and had a plus-ten rating.

A native of St. Albert, Alberta, Mitchell was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2nd round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft with the 57th overall pick after playing three years at the University of Denver. The 25-year-old right-shot defenseman was acquired by the Bruins along with Alec Regula in exchange for Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno on June 26, 2023.
