The Chicago Cubs have shown potential as a contending team in the National League this season, but consistency and injuries have hindered their progress in recent weeks.

It’s unclear what the team is fully capable of, as injuries seem to constantly rotate players in and out of the lineup. Despite these setbacks, the Cubs should have a better record than their current standing. Following another loss to the New York Mets on Sunday evening, Chicago’s record is 37-41.

Although the record is not ideal, the Cubs remain in the playoff race. A few strategic moves and the return of injured players could propel them into the postseason.

With the MLB trade deadline approaching, the Cubs have become a team to watch closely. Jed Hoyer, the team’s executive, might decide to aggressively add talent or focus on offseason acquisitions instead.

Given the team’s potential, it seems likely that Chicago will be active in trade discussions before the deadline.

One potential target for the Cubs is Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, according to MLB reporter George Ofman.

Flaherty would be an interesting addition for the Cubs, though starting pitching isn’t their most pressing need. Acquiring him might push a current starter into the bullpen, but it’s not the move fans are most eager to see.

During the 2024 season with the Tigers, Flaherty has started 14 games, posting a 5-4 record, a 2.92 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, and an 8.3 K/BB ratio.

At 28 years old, Flaherty is set to become a free agent in the upcoming offseason, which could make the Cubs hesitant to pursue him. They are more likely to seek trades for players with future team control.

However, if the Cubs decide to bolster their starting rotation, Flaherty could be a sensible choice. He wouldn’t require a hefty trade package and would be able to fill a role for Chicago.
