Carlton’s list manager says Blake Acres’ poise under pressure has earned him a two-year contract extension, keeping him with the team until the end of 2027.
The crucial wingman is likely to conclude his career with his third club, having played 39 out of 40 possible games for the Blues since transferring from Fremantle last season.
Acres, 28, has maintained his consistent performance from his first season at Ikon Park and stood out in the Blues’ dominant win over Geelong with 24 disposals, eight marks, and a goal on Saturday night.
He delivered an impressive display in Carlton’s breakthrough elimination final victory over Sydney last year, featuring two critical last-line saves and a vital late goal.
Carlton’s head of list management, Nick Austin, said the new contract was a deserved reward for Acres’ contributions.
“Blake is a talented and reliable player, his ability to impact the play at both ends of the ground is a real asset for the team,” Austin said.
“He shows great composure in high-pressure situations. He knows his role and consistently performs it for the team.
“Embracing team roles has become a point of pride for the playing group, and Blake has been a leader in this regard.”
The extension for Acres coincided with the Western Bulldogs re-signing small forward Rhylee West to a two-year contract following his standout four-goal performance against Fremantle in his 50th game last week.
The 23-year-old, son of club legend Scott West, expressed his excitement about his future at Whitten Oval.
Drafted with pick 26 in 2018, West is on track for his most games in a season and has already achieved a career-high 17 goals in 2024.
“I’m happy to be here at this club. Since I arrived six years ago, the group has been very tight. I’ve grown with this group and seen them grow too,” West said.
“Reflecting on my journey so far, it’s been a longer one to reach 50 games, but I’m grateful for how it has turned out.
“Without those challenges, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
