The Atlanta Braves are clearly in need of outfield help due to injuries sidelining Ronald Acuña Jr. and Michael Harris II, which has hampered their performance. General Manager Alex Anthopoulos has a track record of using trades effectively to bolster the team, similar to how he replaced Acuña in 2021, transforming the Braves into World Series champions.

While the current Braves roster differs significantly from three years ago, could the solution for 2024 resemble that of 2021? Aaron Gleeman and Eno Sarris of The Athletic identified Joc Pederson of the Arizona Diamondbacks as a trade target among “good regulars” who could be available at the deadline. This news would certainly pique the interest of Braves fans, who remember Pederson’s impactful postseason performances and clutch home runs in 2021.

However, for a reunion with Pederson to materialize in 2024, a few things would need to happen. Firstly, the Diamondbacks would need to slide in the standings by the July 31 deadline. While their season has been underwhelming, their current position just 2.5 games out of postseason contention complicates any potential sell-off.

Secondly, the Braves would need assurance that Pederson can still handle defensive duties, especially in left field. Despite being primarily a designated hitter with the Diamondbacks, Pederson logged significant outfield time as recently as 2022, albeit with mixed defensive metrics.

If Pederson proves capable defensively, his offensive contributions would be a significant upgrade for Atlanta. His .897 OPS and 155 OPS+ this season are both career highs, particularly effective against right-handed pitching, which could complement Adam Duvall’s right-handed bat in a platoon setup.

While Arizona’s potential as sellers remains uncertain, the Braves should monitor Pederson closely. Left-handed power hitters are a valuable commodity, and acquiring one of Pederson’s caliber could prove pivotal for Atlanta’s postseason aspirations in 2024.
