Newcastle United are close to securing their second transfer of the summer with 19-year-old free agent Miodrag Pivas set to join next week.

Pivas was seen at St James’ Park on Wednesday, fueling speculation online before it was confirmed that the Serbian defensive midfielder is finalizing his move to Tyneside.

This signing is viewed as one for the future. Pivas comes from the Serbian Superliga, where he made 18 appearances for FK Jedinstvo Ub. With his contract set to expire at the end of the month, Newcastle acted quickly to acquire him.

Pivas, hailed as one of Serbia’s brightest young stars, attracted Newcastle’s swift action to secure his signature before other clubs showed interest.

Nemanja Matic praises Pivas’ potential
Former Manchester United and Serbia star Nemanja Matic praised Pivas, with the Northern Echo relaying his comments:

Miodrag Pivaš - Sportal.rs

“A huge talent and serious potential. If he continues this way, he’s on the path to the national team. In my opinion, we haven’t seen a player with such predispositions since Nemanja Vidic and Branislav Ivanovic. A complete player and a top professional.”

Pivas likely to be loaned out next season
While we might see Pivas during pre-season if Eddie Howe wants to evaluate him, he is not expected to be part of the first team next season. It is anticipated that, like Yankuba Minteh last year, Pivas will be sent out on loan.

Hopefully, if Pivas achieves the same success as Minteh, Newcastle will retain him rather than sell him as seems likely with Minteh.

Nonetheless, it’s encouraging to see Newcastle continuing to pursue exciting young talent even without the involvement of Dan Ashworth.
