The Chicago Cubs are approaching a critical stretch in their 2024 season. With the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, players are essentially playing for their jobs.

Recently, Jed Hoyer expressed strong criticism about the team’s performance and hinted that if things don’t improve soon, the Cubs might start selling off talent.

One player who stands out as a potential trade candidate is veteran starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks. ClutchPoints recently suggested that Chicago should consider trading its longtime starter. While it would be a bittersweet decision, it might be in the best interest of the team in the long run.

“But with all that said, Hendricks’ contract is up at the end of the season, and at 34, he’s approaching a stage of his career where every year is a precious opportunity. If Chicago isn’t going to compete for a title, Hendricks needs to get himself to a contender.”

Trading Hendricks would not only provide the Cubs with some value in return but also give Hendricks the chance to compete for a championship with a contending team.

So far in the 2024 campaign, Hendricks has had a rollercoaster season. He has a 1-5 record, a 6.87 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP, and has struck out 43 batters over 14 games and nine starts, totaling 57.2 innings. Despite his overall numbers, his last two starts have been outstanding, showing he can still be a valuable part of a successful rotation.

Hendricks has been crucial to the Cubs’ organization, notably helping bring a World Series to Chicago in 2016. His departure, whenever it happens, will be felt deeply.

As the trade deadline approaches, expect daily rumors surrounding the Cubs. Hendricks will be a key name to watch, especially if Chicago can put together a winning streak soon.
