The Mariners announced the addition of catcher Seby Zavala to their roster, with left-hander Jhonathan Díaz being optioned to Triple-A Tacoma. Additionally, the Mariners signed right-hander Chris Devenski to a major league contract, although he will report to Tacoma. Prior to these moves, Seattle had three openings on their 40-man roster, now reduced to one vacancy.

Zavala, 30, was part of the trade involving Eugenio Suárez in November. Initially used as a defensive backup catcher while Cal Raleigh handled most of the playing time, Zavala saw limited action, accumulating only 43 plate appearances by mid-June with a batting average of .154/.214/.282 and a 37.2% strikeout rate. With Mitch Garver, initially expected to primarily serve as a designated hitter, taking on more catching duties, Zavala was designated for assignment and subsequently outrighted. Despite having the option to elect free agency, he remained with the Mariners and is now back on the roster.

Zavala’s return is likely due to Garver’s injury status after being hit on the right wrist by a pitch on Sunday. With Garver unavailable for a few days, the Mariners needed a backup catcher, leading to Zavala’s promotion. Once Garver is healthy, Zavala might be reassigned since he is out of minor league options.

Devenski, 33, recently released by the Rays, quickly found a new opportunity with the Mariners. Despite his veteran status preventing a minor league assignment without consent, he has agreed to report to Tacoma. Devenski struggled with the Rays this season, posting a 6.75 ERA over 26 2/3 innings, with below-average strikeout and walk rates of 19.7% and 11.5%, respectively. However, the Mariners see potential in revitalizing his performance, given his past success as a dominant reliever with the Astros.

Devenski’s contract with the Mariners is low-cost, with the team owing only the prorated major league minimum, offset by the Rays covering his previous salary commitments. The Mariners’ bullpen has faced injuries this season, making Devenski a valuable addition to potentially bolster their relief pitching.

In summary, these moves address immediate needs for the Mariners, providing depth and potential for both the catching and pitching positions.
