Could the Red Sox Pursue National League Rookie of the Year for Middle Infield Boost Before Trade Deadline?
With the July 30 trade deadline fast approaching, the Boston Red Sox might be considering a surprising move to enhance their middle infield. Following a tough 1-4 start to the unofficial second half of the season, the Red Sox are under pressure to strengthen their roster. While Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow is focused on improving the pitching staff, reports suggest he may also be eyeing a right-handed bat.
FOX Sports’ Rowan Kavner pointed out that, despite expectations for the Red Sox to prioritize pitching, there is also a pressing need for a right-handed hitter to bolster the lineup. Kavner mentioned Cincinnati Reds’ second baseman Jonathan India as a potential target. India is having a solid season, batting .275 with 30 extra-base hits, eight home runs, 40 RBIs, and a .796 OPS (122 OPS+) in 93 games.
However, India’s fit with the Red Sox might be questionable. With two more years of team control beyond 2024 and the anticipated return of shortstop Trevor Story by next spring, India’s long-term value may not align with Boston’s timeline. Additionally, top prospect Marcelo Mayer is advancing rapidly through the minors, and Vaughn Grissom is already on the mend.
India’s offensive capabilities are notable, but his defensive performance has been a concern. Throughout his career, he has struggled defensively, though he has shown some improvement in 2024.
Instead of focusing on another controllable middle infielder, the Red Sox might benefit more from acquiring pitching help and seeking a rental right-handed bat to complement Masataka Yoshida or an outfielder to keep Ceddanne Rafaela at shortstop.
