Since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Cam Bynum has played only safety in the NFL. Many forget that Bynum played cornerback at the University of California for all four years. After being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings, former head coach Mike Zimmer switched him from cornerback to safety.

**Minnesota Vikings’ Safety Cam Bynum Potentially Shifting to Cornerback?**
Paul Allen (Voice of the Minnesota Vikings) mentioned on KFAN that he saw Bynum taking reps with the cornerbacks and defensive backs coach Durante Jones. While this might seem like significant news, it’s not uncommon for safeties to practice as cornerbacks to refine their coverage skills. Given Bynum’s experience as a cornerback in college, this isn’t entirely surprising.

“I saw Murphy and Shaq Griffin with DB’s coach, Durante Jones. And then Cam Bynum was waved over. And this was early in practice. Cam Bynum, a former corner at the University of California, was doing some work with the corners yesterday.” — Paul Allen, KFAN

The Vikings are currently depleted in the cornerback position. Khyree Jackson tragically died in a car crash a few weeks ago, and Mekhi Blackmon tore his ACL on the first day of training camp.

**What’s Next for the Minnesota Vikings’ Cornerback Room?**
The Vikings plan to add another “impact” cornerback from the free agent market, as confirmed by head coach Kevin O’Connell before Saturday’s training camp practice. No specific names were mentioned, but a few decent cornerbacks are available to sign.

If the Vikings don’t make a major move, cornerbacks Akayleb Evans and Andrew Booth Jr. have the opportunity to prove themselves, though they have shown critical weaknesses during their time with the team. The Vikings have several options to address the need at cornerback, whether it’s stepping up from within the roster, signing a free agent, or moving Bynum from safety to cornerback. Only time will tell.
