The Atlanta Braves made a notable trade on Monday evening, reacquiring San Francisco Giants outfielder Jorge Soler, their 2021 World Series MVP. In addition, the Braves are bringing back reliever and former ‘Night Shift’ member Luke Jackson, a move described by ESPN’s MLB Insider Jeff Passan as “bringing the band back together.”

This trade addresses two major needs for Atlanta: bolstering their outfield and enhancing an already strong bullpen. The familiarity with both players, who were key figures just three years ago, adds to the strategic value of the move. However, the trade also sees the departure of another Night Shift member.

The Braves had previously signed Eddie Rosario in an attempt to recapture some of their 2021 magic.
In exchange for Soler and Jackson, the Braves sent Tyler Matzek and minor league infielder Sabin Ceballos to the Giants. Ceballos was ranked as Atlanta’s 17th overall prospect according to MLB.com. Matzek, a team legend for his crucial performance during the 2021 World Series Title Run, has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, appearing in only 11 games since the start of the 2023 season.
From a business perspective, General Manager Alex Anthopoulos traded an often-injured reliever and an average prospect for a healthy reliever and an outfielder who has posted a .240/.330/.419 offensive line, including 12 home runs this season. This trade also solidifies one of the corner outfield positions until Michael Harris II returns, likely before the season’s end.
Soler is in the first year of a three-year, $42-million contract with the Giants, indicating the Braves’ willingness to take on a significant salary for more than just a half-season rental. Jackson, though struggling this season with a 5.40 ERA in 36 appearances, brings additional depth to the bullpen.
Anthopoulos is actively working to improve the team ahead of the trade deadline and still has resources to acquire more quality players. This trade demonstrates the Braves’ commitment to winning and their recognition that their title-winning window remains open with the right additions.
