The San Diego Padres deserve credit for their relentless pursuit of success.

In the past five years, they’ve established themselves as one of the most proactive teams in baseball, consistently seeking major moves to enhance their roster. While they haven’t yet clinched a championship, their effort is evident.

This trend continued at this year’s trade deadline, as the Padres made two significant bullpen acquisitions. They first secured Jason Adam from the Tampa Bay Rays earlier in the week and then completed their major deal just before the deadline by bringing in former Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott.

To acquire Scott, the Padres sent several top prospects to Miami, aiming to create one of the league’s strongest bullpens.

With the additions of Adam and Scott, the Padres’ bullpen now features Robert Suarez and Jeremiah Estrada, offering the potential to shorten games as they compete for a playoff spot. This reinforcement is crucial given the injuries to their starting pitchers, particularly Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove.

The Padres’ willingness to trade prospects and spend significantly on players like Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts exemplifies their aggressive approach. They represent the kind of ambition that small- and mid-market teams aspire to.

The acquisition of Scott and Adam follows an earlier bold move when they traded for infielder Luis Arraez, a two-time batting champion, adding another powerful bat to their lineup.

As of Tuesday, the Padres held the third wild-card spot in the competitive National League playoff race. Their strategic moves give them a strong chance to secure a playoff berth and potentially make a deep postseason run if their starting pitchers return to health.
