As the MLB offseason approaches, the Houston Astros could be in the market for a high-profile starting pitcher, with significant decisions looming regarding Justin Verlander and Yusei Kikuchi’s free agency.

While they are currently focused on a playoff push, the Astros’ front office is well aware of the extensive work that lies ahead once the season concludes. Despite facing numerous challenges this year, the team’s ability to remain in playoff contention is commendable.

Looking ahead, it’s likely the Astros will adopt an aggressive approach in the offseason. General Manager Dana Brown is determined to bring Houston back into serious World Series contention. Although the team has strong foundations, they need to bolster their roster further, and acquiring a top-tier starting pitcher could be crucial.

One potential target is Corbin Burnes, who has had an outstanding season with the Baltimore Orioles. As Burnes is expected to enter free agency, he could be an ideal addition for the Astros. Houston would be an attractive destination if Burnes decides to leave Baltimore.

So far in the 2024 MLB season, Burnes has made 24 starts, posting a 12-4 record with a 2.71 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and a 3.9 K/BB ratio across 149.2 innings pitched.

Although Burnes may be inclined to stay with the Orioles, given his success this season, the Astros should certainly express strong interest when he hits the free-agent market. Burnes is the type of ace who could anchor Houston’s rotation, a position they need to strengthen.

Projections suggest Burnes could command a deal around seven years and $255.5 million, a substantial figure that might be a stretch for Houston. However, the Astros could view this as a worthwhile investment to secure a new ace.

With Verlander no longer the reliable superstar he once was, and his return next season uncertain, Burnes could be the ideal replacement to lead the Astros’ rotation.

Expect the Astros to enter the offseason with an aggressive mindset. To return to elite contender status, they may need to make some bold moves, and Burnes should be at the top of their wishlist.
