Former Michigan quarterback and current Minnesota Vikings player J.J. McCarthy has torn the meniscus in his right knee, the team announced Tuesday. The severity of the tear and the expected recovery time are still unclear. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, McCarthy will have surgery this week, which will provide more details on his timeline for return.

McCarthy, who was drafted 10th overall by the Vikings in the 2024 NFL Draft, played in Minnesota’s first preseason game last week, completing 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in a 24-23 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Before joining the NFL, McCarthy had a standout college career at Michigan, leading the Wolverines to a National Championship in 2024. Over three seasons at Michigan, he threw for 6,226 yards and 49 touchdowns, with a 67.6% completion rate, and also contributed 632 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.
