Michigan football made significant additions to its secondary through the transfer portal, and two of those new arrivals are making a strong push for starting roles this fall.

After a busy spring of bolstering their defensive backfield, the Wolverines added both cornerbacks and safeties to enhance their depth. Now, with three weeks of fall camp under their belts, Michigan has good reason to be optimistic about the state of their secondary.

One key player is cornerback transfer Aamir Hall from Albany, who is currently in a heated competition with Jyaire Hill for the starting cornerback position opposite Will Johnson. Hill, a former top-200 recruit, has shown significant improvement since his freshman year and won’t be easily displaced, but Hall is making a strong case for himself. According to Chris Hummer of 247 Sports, Hall is one of the two transfers to watch closely in the Wolverines’ secondary.

Hummer notes, “The Wolverines staff was very high on Aamir Hall when they added the Albany transfer, seeing him as a potential CB3 like Josh Wallace was last season. The other transfer to keep an eye on is safety Wesley Walker, who was a starter at Tennessee last season before a brief stint with Louisville this spring. Walker is competing with Quentin Johnson for a starting spot opposite safety Makari Paige.”

While both Hall and Walker may end up playing in sub-packages, Michigan frequently employs multiple defensive backs in their schemes. Last season, the Wolverines often utilized four safeties, and they are expected to do so again this year, with similar depth at cornerback and nickel positions.

Depth in the secondary is crucial, and Michigan fans can now feel more confident about the team’s defensive backfield as these transfers continue to impress in fall camp.
