Although the Astros will likely try to retain both, there’s no guarantee they won’t leave, especially considering Verlander’s injury issues in 2024.
This situation could push the Astros to pursue one or more starting pitchers in the offseason. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Chicago White Sox are expected to trade starting pitcher Garrett Crochet, and the Astros could be a potential suitor. Nightengale also noted that the White Sox might look to move center fielder Luis Robert Jr.
Crochet, at 25 years old, would be an attractive long-term option for Houston, especially if they can secure him with a contract extension. He has shown flashes of elite potential, starting in 25 games this season with a 6-9 record, a 3.61 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, a 5.9 K/BB ratio, and 124.2 innings pitched. These stats suggest he could be a valuable addition to the Astros’ rotation.
While there’s no guarantee the Astros will pursue Crochet, it would make sense for them to consider the move, especially if he’s made available in the offseason.
