New Auburn Tigers offensive coordinator Derrick Nix shared his thoughts on what he’s observed from quarterback Payton Thorne since his arrival on the Plains.
The Auburn Tigers are an unpredictable team heading into the 2024-25 season. Some believe they will see significant progress in Hugh Freeze’s second year, while others think the season may resemble last year’s struggles.
However, there’s consensus that much will depend on Payton Thorne’s performance. If Thorne can replicate his 2021 Michigan State campaign, where he threw for 3,232 yards and 27 touchdowns, Auburn could be in a position to win many games. If he struggles, the team may find itself fighting just to reach a bowl game.
One person who believes in Thorne is offensive coordinator Derrick Nix, now in his first year with the Tigers. Nix spoke about Thorne’s impact since joining the team.
“I think, number one, he’s become an extension of the coaching staff,” Nix said. “He’s becoming a leader, understanding what we want to achieve as coaches, getting us in and out of checks, adjusting protections, and building confidence with our receivers by giving them chances to make plays.”
Nix emphasized that Thorne needs to continue this progress but said he is “very pleased” with where the quarterback is right now.
Thorne is coming off a season where he completed 149 of 238 passes for 1,671 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. After throwing for over 2,000 yards in each of his two seasons as Michigan State’s starter, Thorne is aiming to return to that form this fall.
With a strong running back group, revamped offensive line, and an improved wide receiver corps, Thorne has the pieces in place to potentially have his best college season yet.
