In a surprising move, the Dodgers have announced that Jason Heyward has been designated for assignment.

Jason Heyward, who initially rose through the ranks of the Atlanta Braves organization, was once considered one of the most promising prospects of the past two decades, with some scouts even comparing him to the legendary Hank Aaron.

Heyward quickly found success in the majors, earning a spot in the All-Star Game and winning the NL Rookie of the Year. He was seen as the Braves’ next big star, expected to carry the torch for the organization as veterans like Chipper Jones neared retirement.

However, Heyward’s career didn’t follow the trajectory many had anticipated. Despite not making another All-Star appearance after his rookie year, he was traded to the Cardinals after five seasons with Atlanta. Nonetheless, Heyward has enjoyed a remarkable career, earning significant accolades, including five Gold Gloves and a World Series title with the Cubs, while playing in the league for 15 years. It’s a career most would envy, and as it winds down, a reunion with Atlanta seems like a fitting conclusion.

Although Heyward wasn’t having his best season with the Dodgers, hitting just .208 with six home runs over 63 games, his .682 OPS is still respectable. Moreover, he is coming off a year where he posted an .813 OPS over 124 games in Los Angeles.

Considering the current state of the Braves’ roster, adding a player of Heyward’s experience and skill set could be beneficial, even if he doesn’t play every day. His presence could bring a needed spark to the clubhouse.

With limited better options likely to become available soon, this move seems to make sense from every angle.
