The Tennessee Titans had a mediocre defense last season based on their statistics, but they weren’t content with just being “okay.”
This was evident in their aggressive offseason moves, including acquiring cornerbacks L’Jarius Sneed via trade from the Kansas City Chiefs and signing Chidobe Awuzie to a three-year deal in free agency after his time with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Their bold moves didn’t stop there. The Titans also added Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams during training camp and traded for linebacker Ernest Jones last week as teams finalized their 53-man rosters.
With a new defensive coordinator, Dennard Wilson, the unit is expected to look vastly different this season.
“New DC Dennard Wilson’s aggressive scheme will benefit the secondary by incorporating more press coverage,” ESPN insider Turron Davenport reports. “The secondary is where the team has seen the most talent infusion. Tennessee signed CB Chidobe Awuzie and S Quandre Diggs to start, added S Jamal Adams, and traded for L’Jarius Sneed, one of the league’s top cornerbacks. Last season, the Titans had an NFL-worst six interceptions, while Wilson’s Ravens secondary was second in the league with 18 interceptions in 2023.”
If the Titans can achieve an above-average defense this season, it will relieve a lot of pressure on second-year quarterback Will Levis. Levis is expected to make significant strides with a new offensive scheme and an upgraded supporting cast, including Calvin Ridley, Tony Pollard, and Tyler Boyd.
While the Titans aren’t expected to make a big splash this season, they shouldn’t be counted out entirely.
