The Colts might be without their kicker for Week 1. Veteran Matt Gay revealed he underwent hernia surgery and is unsure if he’ll play on Sunday, according to Mike Chappell of FOX59/CBS4 Sports.

Gay said he began feeling pain last weekend, and after getting checked, it was determined surgery was necessary. Although the recovery time is expected to be short, Gay may still miss the game against the Texans.

After a successful three-year run with the Rams, Gay signed a four-year, $22.5M deal with the Colts last offseason. However, his first season in Indianapolis wasn’t as efficient, hitting just 80.5% of his field goals—his lowest rate since his rookie year.

Despite this, Gay set a single-game record with four field goals of over 50 yards in September and made 35 of 36 extra-point attempts throughout the season.

To prepare for Gay’s possible absence, the Colts signed kicker Spencer Shrader to the practice squad. The undrafted rookie from Notre Dame made 15 of 22 field-goal attempts and 61 of 62 extra points last season. At South Florida, Shrader had a 68.3% field-goal conversion rate and 99% success rate on extra points.
